Hello! Welcome to the Bike Around Britain website

The concept is fairly simple, 2 guys, Alan Green and Simon Hoyle doing a 2800 mile coastal circuit around mainland Britain on Motorbikes in just 7 days! Why do this you might ask?... here's the reason...

Alan's son Joseph was born in July 2004 and had alot of problems at birth and his local hospital were unable to look after him as he was so ill, it was then he was transferred to St. Mary's in Manchester who saved his life. In his first few weeks of life with the help of St. Mary's he fought against...

» Severe Birth Asphyxiation with ongoing
   Breathing Difficulties
» Low Blood Sugar (Hypoglycaemia)
» Severe Infection (Sepsis)
» Heart Murmur and Heart Valve Problems
» Intra-Ventricular Brain Haemorrhage
» High Levels of Jaundice
» Seizures

After spending 6 weeks in the Special Care baby Unit, he was left with Severe Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy and Deafness amongst other problems. He has since had 2 cochlear implants, also done through the Audiology Department at MRI and St. Mary's, which now help him to hear, but the cerebral palsy is a daily battle for him as he can't sit unaided, stand or walk. But it's a fact that despite these problems without the specialist care of the Doctors and Nurses at St. Mary's, Joseph would not have survived

Manchester is now in the process of building a dedicated specialist Childrens Hospital, which will no doubt help to save the lives of many more children from all over the UK and beyond just like Joseph

It was while I was trying to think of a way of combining our love of motorbiking and raising money for charity that Alan had the idea of doing a coastal circuit of Mainland Britain, it was then that Bike Around Britain was born!
